Gunnar & Pearl Engskov

Gunnar was Dagmar's youngest brother. When he was younger, Gunnar was one of the first five men hired to work on the Hoover Dam Project. They lived in tents at the future dam site and did artistic renderings of the eventual project for the engineers and for release to the public. Gunnar had a successful painting and contracting business in Omaha, Nebraska. At age 52, he decided he needed a change and moved the family to Arkansas where they bought a motel. Pearl and Gunnar had four children: Marilyn, Louise, Paul, and Mark.

I am Louise (Engskov) Dungan from Fort Worth, TX now. Just wondered if you have ever visited the www.ellisisland.org website. It is very interesting. On it, you can search and see the trip that Christian and Augusta Brigitte Engskow took to get to the U.S. It lists the boat they were on and certain statistics about the ship. Also you can view the entire manifest, which includes my father, Gunnar Stender Engskow (later Engskov). Others on the same trip were Bernhard (Ben) Engskow, Johanes (John) Christian Engskow, and Rosa (Rose) Louise Engskow. By the way, Ben and John always kept the "w" on Engskow, as did Ernst in Denmark.

I tried searching for Dagmar (there are several), but was not sure of her birthdate - you may have more luck. I don't know exactly when she came to the U.S. or how old she was at the time.

One of our relatives, Ninna Engskow (Ben's widow) lives in a Lutheran Retirement apartment in Blair, NE. Although 94 this year, she is still active at Dana College there translating letters and manuscripts from Danish into English. She is the one that translated Ernst's book into English. The project she is currently working on is translating Danish pioneers old letters for the college archives. She has been cited by the college a number of times for her work.
